Sunday Outfit Post

This is the outfit I wore to go see Cars 2 last weekend with the family. It's probably one of the very first vintage dresses I ever bought- so long ago I don't remember when or where I got it, and that's something I am usually really good at remembering!

It's leopard print with a shirtwaist collar and cuffed sleeves. It's really comfortable and I wear it often. The shoes are tan and white two-tone oxfords, and I'm wearing a yellow bead necklace and the red and yellow crocheted hair flower Miss Cherry Bubbles sent me!

This was the first time we have ever gone to a movie as a family. We just never go to the movies- we don't have a lot of disposable income and usually we prefer to do other things. But I had some really old (like from 2007) gift cards to use up so we took the kids. They were big fans of the first Cars movie and we thought we'd give it a whirl. (BTW, Cars 1 was much better.)  I think the last movie my husband went to see was Blair Witch (which we hated) so you can see how long it's been.

We went to the matinee just in case the kids got squirmy, but we didn't have to worry. They were both really good and my daughter kept herself busy by eating all the popcorn!

Sunday Outfit Post: Swirl (now with photo!)

This is my one and only Swirl dress. I bought it at a tiny little antique shop in Corning, NY that had a single rack of vintage dresses. It was marked, "Vintage housecoat, $9". I think I ran some of the customers over taking it to the register. (I also wish I had bought the 1950s taffeta evening dress they had for the same price, but it didn't quite fit me and I didn't have my etsy shop yet.)

It's a pink cotton seersucker with embroidered cherries on the top. I'm also wearing some white peeptoes that I had forgotten about until the other day when I was collecting some more stuff for the shop. Love it when that happens!

Behind me is my first canning project of the year- 8 quarts of rhubarb. I also made a rhubarb pie, but that was gone before I thought to take a picture of it. I had close to 25 pounds of rhubarb to do something with!

Sunday Outfit Post

This is one of my favorite dresses. It's a 1970s vintage waitress-style dress, but with a very 1940s feel. The shoes are canvas wedges which are so comfortable- I wear them with everything. The bracelet is red, white and blue beads, strung in a confetti style- I forget the name of this type of bracelet, forgive me!

I actually took this photo on Thursday for my son's Kindergarten graduation. I wanted to wear something that was different from all the other parents but still classy and summery. I'm the only retro mom there and believe me, I get funny looks from some of the PTA moms. They're such a clique in this school; thank goodness we're going to a different school next year- I just can't stand some of them. I'd be curious to know how some of you handle people like that; it's obvious that I don't fit in and I don't want to! :P

Family Outfit post: Western Wear!

Yesterday was one of those rare days where the kids and I all dressed vintage- with a theme. My daughter started it off with choosing a darling 1950s vintage western-themed dress. She is almost three and chooses her own outfits. No matter what I can get her to put on, it *has* to include a dress. The end result is often a mix of several patterns, several layers and pink and purple. Plus a dress over top of everything! But this outfit was pretty simple- at least until she put a Halloween costume over top later in the afternoon (no pix, sorry! ;).

Since she chose this dress, in a blue oxford cloth with red bandana-like yoke and belt, I remembered that I had a matching shirt for my son. Alas, that did not fit him- it's headed off to the Etsy store, I guess- so we got out a different western shirt, this one with an embroidered Mexican scene on the yoke. It's a little big for him...

To finish the familial ensemble, I got out a 1970s-vintage western shirt for myself, a Montana Silversmiths belt, cuffed jeans and some of the shoes I got on my birthday thrift crawl. They are deadstock caramel-colored leather mocs, in the style of the classic 1930s  LL Bean moc . I didn't realize it until I was wearing them around the other day that they are also steel-toed! Seems a little strange to put steel toes in this style shoe, but at least I don't have to worry about dropping anything!  I have been looking for a vintage lace-up outdoors shoe for a while, and this is the closest thing I have found.

I'm looking to re-create this outfit from a photo published in a 1950 issue of Sports Afield.

I haven't yet found the exact shoes I want; I think those in the photo are like these vintage Buster Brown shoes of my daughter's:

I can't find any in a women's size 7, but I'll keep looking- I know they're out there!
